The Importance of Cultural Humility in Youth Support Services

In today’s increasingly diverse society, the need for inclusive and respectful youth support
services has never been greater. As organizations like ACTS Change continue to advocate
for youth mental health, addiction recovery, and empowerment, one core value must remain
front and center: cultural humility.
What is Cultural Humility?
Cultural humility goes beyond simply understanding another person’s culture. It is the
ongoing process of self-reflection and self-critique, recognizing that we do not have all the
answers, and being open to learning from those we serve. Unlike cultural competence,
which can suggest a finite level of understanding, cultural humility embraces lifelong
learning, mutual respect, and partnership.
Why Cultural Humility Matters
Youth from diverse backgrounds—including newcomers, Indigenous communities, and
racialized groups—often face barriers to accessing mental health and addiction services.
These barriers may stem from past experiences of discrimination, stigma, or a lack of
culturally appropriate care. Cultural humility helps bridge these gaps by:

  • Building Trust: When support workers approach youth with curiosity and openness
instead of assumptions, it fosters trust. Youth feel seen, heard, and validated.
  • Reducing Power Imbalances: Cultural humility encourages providers to step back
and acknowledge the expertise young people have about their own experiences.
  • Encouraging Tailored Support: Understanding the social, cultural, and spiritual
factors that shape a young person’s worldview allows for more personalized and
    effective interventions.

How ACTS Change Embodies Cultural Humility
At ACTS Change, our programs are rooted in respect and inclusivity. Whether through our
Mental Health and Addiction Support Services, Nutrition & Fitness programming, or
the ACTS Youth Network, we are intentional about creating spaces where every young
person—regardless of background—can access support that respects their identity and
story.
We listen. We learn. And we collaborate with our youth, rather than trying to fix them.
Moving Forward
For real transformation in youth mental health and addiction recovery, embracing cultural
humility is not optional—it is essential. As we continue our work in communities across
Alberta, ACTS Change remains committed to honoring the cultures, histories, and voices of
the youth we serve.
Because true change begins with understanding—and the courage to grow alongside those
we support.

At ACTS Change, cultural humility is at the heart of how we support youth. More than cultural awareness, it’s about lifelong learning, self-reflection, and honoring each young person’s lived experience. By embracing openness and inclusivity, we build trust, reduce barriers, and provide care that truly respects every identity and story.
