UBUNTU and Community Centered Self-care: PROTECTING MY PEACE IN THE MIDDLE OF CHAOS
The workshop, titled Ubuntu and Community-Centered Self-Care in Response to Political Unrest and in Honour of Black History Month, is a one-hour workshop facilitated by Shayla S. Dube, MSW, RCSW. The session will explore how political unrest affects individuals and communities, with a focus on self-care practices grounded in Ubuntu, emphasizing communal healing and resilience.
This session will examine the impact of political unrest on the mind, heart, and body (the Three Storytellers), helping participants assess their emotional regulation and recognize when they are in a state of dysregulation. It will introduce somatic tools for self-regulation and communication skills for boundary setting, all within the framework of Ubuntu-centered self-care as a collective, interconnected practice.
The target audience is people of African descent who are Racialized as Black, including youth and adults, as well as other racial equity-seeking individuals who consider themselves allies in the fight for justice and collective healing.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how political unrest affects their emotional and physical well-being. They will learn practical somatic tools for self-regulation, communication skills for setting boundaries, and strategies for Ubuntu-centered self-care, all aimed at promoting both personal and communal resilience.
